America's Libraries

Finding the Women Who Help Make Them

Home: Welcome
Library Example.jpeg

Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and the notable architects who designed his libraries, have received most of the credit...

But, often behind the scenes, women were instrumental in bringing these libraries to town across America, planning them, and then running them once they were completed.

The Project

On February 12, 2024 I will begin a six month driving tour of America's libraries. Along the way I will visit some 400 working Carnegie libraries and an equal number of other community libraries. To write this book, I will be interviewing librarians, conducting archival research, and taking pictures. I will mainly sleep in my care (a 2015 Subaru Outback, but will also stay in hotels, youth hostels, and 'couchsurf'.

I'll be living in my Subaru Outback, nicknamed "Goldfinger"

Traveling six months to visit....

Google maps allows me to draw a continuous curvy loop connecting Carnegie libraries across the country

400 Carnegie Libraries...

Females often received little recognition for their work in our nation's libraries

and the women who help make them.
